Abergavenny Thirst Day

So, up the Marches for Abergavenny Town v Treharris Athletic Western Stars.

A couple of hours before kick off and the game still on with the weather holding out apart from the cloud descending on the hills that surround the town

A wander through the castle grounds…

…to the obviously named Bridge Inn.

An hour to go and up to the ground, but all is dark.

A search of the club website and twitter reveals nothing but wishes of a happy new year.

But the Treharris twitter reveals the games was called off mid afternoon. Not that it would trouble the fixtures board.

So next train down to Newport and the Olde Muringer House where the usual crowd of Goldie Lookin’ Chain have been replaced by old men and mature students. Find ourselves trapped in a poetry open mike session. We try to escape but are shouted down by the audience. Dai starts a discussion with the compere.

The day previous was the new Bicester chord on Chiltern Railways new Oxford Parkway service. Bailed at Princes Risborough for the vintage peak hours only vintage Bubble Car to Aylesbury.

Headed to the Hop Pole, which is a brew pub for the Aylesbury brewery.

Then on to Amersham v Kent Athletic in Spartan 2. Game was a 1-5 walk over for the away team. Pitch in remarkably good nick. Only other highlight was the York City stickers on the Underground back into Baker Street.
