Rochdale Hornets v South Wales Scorpions
My 'local' rugby league team from my days down south, were playing a convenient game in my new part of the world, so it was a Sunday jaunt down the Calder Valley, then on to Rochdale.
The previous Oldham loop line has been converted to tram operation, which has also seen it extended into Rochdale town centre.
This took me to the impressive bus station, for some shonky local operator heading out to Spotland.
The rugby club sold their Athletic Ground in 1988, to move in with the football team.
Although the ground has been dragged into this century, the names are still firmly in the 1970s.
Only the main stand was open.
Even as a 40 year old adult, this thing terrified me. God knows what trauma it brought to the kids.
Rochdale had just started to put a strong run together, and sat second in the league. South Wales are now the whipping boys of the professional leagues, although this season Oxford and Hemel seem to be as desperate.
It was no surprise to see a Rochdale win, but 70-6 was probably more emphatic than was expected. As a Scorpions fan, not getting nilled is as much as can be hoped for at away games.
I walked back to the centre, where a tram was waiting to take me up the hill to the station.
At the station, engineering works meant trains were spinning here, so some rare use of the old Oldham loop bay.
