Win-can't-ton

Wincanton Town v Ashton and Backwell United

The usual move off Swindon.

Into Bath and then headed down the scenic Avon valley, with the converted water mills at Bradford on Avon.

On to Yeovil Pen Mill, with its unusual platform arrangement.

I left the train here, with the semaphore pulled off for the train to continue on its way to  Weymouth.

With the pristine staff club closed...

...it was the nearby Guide listed Great Western for me, with an Elgood’s – Snake Slayer.

My next move was by bus, heading out to Sherborne.

This took us up the rarity of a central Somerset hill.

Into Sherborne, and whilst a trip round its famous cathedral was considered...

...instead it was to the Previously guide Digby Tap for a Tanner’s – TA Gold.

I was then back on the bus, though this one was more shy about its destination.

This was in fact Wincanton.

This was my game for today, the ground being somewhat out of town.

In fact it was found to be closer to Hampshire than Wincanton, passing under the A303 and the former Somerset and Dorset railway.

After a 20 minute stomp, there was eventually some sign that we were getting close.

Why not just get together and get one large sign?

Although the car park was reasonably busy...

...the ground didn't show any signs of life.

The nets were in lawn mowing position.

I had checked Twitter in the morning and there was no indication the game was in doubt, but eventually they had got around to calling it off around midday, although a further check of the Western League site had announced it at ten.

This was the only sign of any dampness, ten foot behold no one goal.

Nuts

So it was back into town to commiserate at the Nog Inn with an Keystone – Large One, whilst waiting for the two hourly bus to Yeovil to turn up.

I jumped on this as far as Templecombe.

A quick stop off in the Templar's Retreat.

Then onto a South West Trains service for Waterloo, changing at Salisbury and Reading to get back to Swindon

On the plus side, I was able to tuck into the provisions acquired in Sherborne, namely Blue Vinney, Marmite Cheddar, Farmer Gould vintage, and a Nuns Of Caen, accompanied by a Glastonbury - Golden Challice and a Thornbridge - Rhubarb Saison.

Back home and a scour of the results revealed that I'd managed to find the only postponement in Southern Britain.
